Drawing of Jean Rudel of MB

87 years old and more passionate than ever about her brushes...

Grany has a deep dream: to share the magic of her art and finally pass on her love for seascapes.

Grany is a (truly) unique and talented artist.

Hello, I’m Julie, the granddaughter of Michèle Buchet.

To me, she’s Grany — the grandmother who inspires me and passed on her artistic soul.

A few years ago, my grandmother picked up her brushes again with incredible energy. Painting brought meaning back to her life and now brightens her days.

Because I love her with all my heart, I decided to take action and support her infulfilling her dream. At 87, every second counts even more.

So far, I’ve helped her join Deviant Art , where she has already:

  • shared 215 artworks
  • connected with 240 fellow artists
  • started speaking English again

Amazing Grany is pushing her limits for her art — and even learning how to “chat” online (she loves saying that word!).

Painting these beautiful, vibrant seascapes brings her so much joy, I knew I had to help her live her dream.

I’m a former engineer turned digital marketer since COVID, and a pastel artist in my spare time… So it felt only natural to support my Grany in the most beautiful adventure of her life.

Grany is a true artist — ready to share her passion with the world.

Her ultimate dream? To exhibit her work across Europe and move seascape lovers with her wild, crashing waves!

It’s not about profit — it’s about emotion. What matters most to her is passing on something deep through her art.

A source of inspiration, Grany welcomes you all into her world.

The Journey of a Passionate and Devoted Artist

Granyis so much more than an accomplished woman, a joyful grandmother, or a talented artist… She is an entire artistic universe shaped by her many facets — and above all, by a deep need to share emotions and move people through her art.

Grany’s Enchanting Paintings

Grany loves painting with oils on any canvas she can get her hands on.

"A little granddaughter anecdote: One day, just to make me happy, Grany painted one of my favorite animals on a pebble. I still keep it today as a lucky charm."

Her true passion puts her in a kind of trance, especially when it comes to the sea and wild, crashing waves.
She also loves painting the landscapes of Charente, where she lives — its rivers and lush fields — as her memories are filled with the glow of southern light.

Her Inspirations

My grandmother is a free spirit, passionate about historical novels. As a child, she traveled by boat from Réunion Island to mainland France and fell deeply in love with coastal landscapes. The sea and its raging waves have always transcended her.

Expressing her emotions through painting allows my grandmother to capture the invisible and make it tangible. The canvas becomes her refuge — a space where her memories, travels, and feelings come alive.

Each brushstroke translates complex emotions: the freedom inspired by crashing waves, the serenity of coastal skies. For her, painting is the purest way to convey the intensity of her experiences — where words sometimes fall short.

Her Play of Light

What fascinates my grandmother most about seascape painting is the play of light. The way light pierces through the waves symbolizes the passage from shadow to brightness, the perpetual rhythm of life.

Capturing light moving through the waves has become both a challenge and an obsession. For my grandmother, it’s a quest for mastery of the subtle — a dance between calm and storm, between the visible and the invisible.

For those who contemplate these plays of light, they become symbols of hope breaking through adversity — a spark finding its way, even in the midst of turmoil.

Her Inner Landscape

My grandmother paints both crashing waves and tranquil seas.

Through them, she channels her emotions and sets them free. When she paints calm waves, she expresses her longing for peace, stability, and harmony with life.

On the other hand, when she paints stormy seas, she’s exploring more intense emotions — a need for release, transformation, and the raw force of feelings too powerful to keep inside.

Her True Calling

Oil painting is the perfect medium for her. Layer after layer, she returns to a detail, transforming a dark cloud into a radiant sunrise.

She lives for the magic of colors blending on her palette. This passion reflects her love for creation and her deep openness to the world.

Interpreting a landscape or reimagining its colors in her own way is one of her gifts. She creates her own scenes, guided entirely by intuition.

Every shade she mixes tells a unique story, revealing her desire to express the singularity of each fleeting moment. Her art is a quest for uniqueness — a way of unveiling her inner world through compositions that belong only to her.

Grany, the Artist Behind the Brushes

Today, I want to share her story with you.

Michèle Buchet was born in Vaison-la-Romaine in February 1937. She spent much of her childhood during the war in the Indian Ocean, where the sea became an inseparable part of her daily life.

During those years, she followed painter Jean Rudel in all his artistic adventures. He was the one who first sparked her love for drawing, and later for painting. From the moment she picked up a brush, the play of colors became her obsession..

But life had other plans, and art took a back seat. Instead of becoming an art teacher, she became a schoolteacher — and my mother was born. She hardly touched her brushes again until retirement.

Because my father, her son-in-law, was in the military, my siblings and I spent several years living in French Guiana and Martinique. This gave her many opportunities to reconnect with the sea during her visits.

In this overseas atmosphere, she returned to painting and regularly gifted her artworks to family and friends. I have several of her landscapes at home that I cherish deeply — especially those that remind me of my childhood in French Guiana.

She had finally returned to painting for the sheer joy of it, and yet… something still felt missing.

Twelve years ago, I decided to give her a gentle push out of her comfort zone.

Her greatest dream has always beento be discovered, to share with the world the overflowing emotions captured in her mesmerizing seascapes.

So, I helped her join DeviantArt — and the possibility of finally receiving feedback on her work reignited her passion more than ever!

She has since made countless fulfilling connections — all without ever leaving her quiet home deep in Charente.

I have to pause here and say how proud I am of my grandmother. When she first started, she barely knew anything about technology… and today, she’s fully independent! She uploads her paintings without any help and even chats in English with other artists on the platform.

As I transitioned into a career in digital marketing, I made it my mission to help her exhibit her work in galleries around the world and finally gain the recognition she deserves as an artist !

Today, I’ve made myself a promise: to use every bit of my new “superpowers” to make her dream come true.
